G’day, fellow cyclists! As someone who’s lucky enough to spend a lot of time on Rottnest Island, I can tell you that cycling is the best way to see everything this gorgeous island has to offer. Whether you’re on a Rottnest Island Guided Bike Tour, or exploring on your own, with 63 beaches, 20 bays, and stunning coastal views, you’re sure to find something to love. Whether you’re here in February, March, April, or May, there’s always something magical about cycling around Rottnest. Wondering, “Is Rottnest hilly for cycling?” Don’t worry, the island is relatively flat, with only a few gentle inclines, making it perfect for cyclists of all levels. Whether you’re cycling around the island on a standard bike, or taking part in an electric bike tour for an easier ride, the experience will be unforgettable. Let’s dive into my personal list of must-see spots while cycling Rottnest Island.

1. Parker Point

Walkway to Parker Point Beach, Rottnest

Let’s kick things off with one of my absolute favourite spots, Parker Point. As you coast along the bike path towards this hidden treasure, the views will start to take your breath away. The water here is so clear you might think you’ve just cycled into a postcard. This is a great place to stretch your legs, take a dip, and enjoy some quiet time. A Rottnest Island cycling guide will tell you it’s the perfect start to your adventure. Whether you’re here in March or April, Parker Point offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle.

Pocillopora also known as Brain or Cauliflower Coral are in abundance at Parker Point

2. Little Salmon Bay

Little Salmon Bay Rotto with Laura the Explorer Tour

Little Salmon Bay is a bit busier compared to some of the other spots, but that’s because it’s absolutely gorgeous! The water here is crystal clear, and it’s a popular spot for snorkeling and swimming. The bike ride down is lovely, and you’ll often see other cyclists and tourists enjoying the view. It’s a fantastic spot for taking a break, swimming, or just relaxing and soaking in the surroundings. If you’re after a quiet experience, check out the map or a tourist map to guide you to quieter areas nearby.

3. Salmon Bay

Stairway to the beautiful Salmon Bay. Come and join me before the crowds

On the flip side, Salmon Bay is a quieter, more serene spot. It’s the perfect place to take a break, relax, and enjoy the calm, clear waters. The bay is great for a peaceful swim, snorkelling or just lying back on the beach and enjoying the gentle ocean breeze. Rottnest Island tours will often highlight Salmon Bay for its beauty and tranquility.

4. Pink Lake

The Salt Lakes have a light pink hue

Now, let me tell you, Pink Lake is one of those places that will make you stop in your tracks. The pink hues of the water are something you have to see to believe. Whether it’s the early morning or the golden hour, this place shines in a way you won’t forget. It’s a great spot for a quick photo op, but don’t just rush through, take a moment to really appreciate nature’s little miracle. If you’re in the area, download a beach map or pink lake map to make sure you don’t miss this must-see spot!

5. Little Armstrong Bay

Secluded and small beach – Little Armstrong Bay

A little off the beaten path, Little Armstrong Bay is a quiet, secluded spot that’s perfect for anyone looking to escape the crowds. The cycle there is beautiful, through bushland and coastal tracks, and once you arrive, it feels like you’ve discovered a hidden paradise. The water’s crystal-clear, making it perfect for a swim, and the peaceful surroundings make it a lovely spot to just pause and unwind. If you’re interested in a more rugged experience, be sure to check out the military history of the island, especially near the Kingstown Barracks.

6. Parakeet Bay

Welcome to Parakeet Bay Rottnest. Boats are moored right up close

If you’re into calm, shallow waters perfect for a swim, Parakeet Bay is your go-to. The ride to this spot is lovely, winding through lush landscapes and along the coast. Once you’re there, you can enjoy a swim in sheltered waters or just take a moment to enjoy the stunning views. If you’re planning a private group tour, this would be a fantastic stop along the way to rest and enjoy the surroundings.

7. The Basin

The Basin is the most popular Rottnest beach and even has surf lifesaving patrolled in Summer.

Aaroundh, The Basin. If you haven’t been here, you’re in for a treat. This protected bay has some of the best swimming conditions on the island, with clear, warm water that’s perfect for a relaxing dip. I always look forward to cycling down here because the ride is a breeze, and once you arrive, it’s a joy to jump straight into the water. If you’re planning a Rottnest Island ferry and bike day trip from Perth, The Basin is a great spot to take a break, especially if you’re traveling with kids or looking for a family-friendly spot.

8. Pinkys Beach

Pinkys Beach is right next to The Basin. You can eat and grab a drink at the resort in the dunes.

Pinkys Beach is one of those places where you can easily spend the whole day. It’s got everything, stunning views, lovely sand, and a great little café where you can grab a bite after your ride. It’s a spot I always recommend to my guests because it has a great vibe and the bike ride to get there is just beautiful. You can relax, swim, or enjoy a drink while watching the sunset, it’s the ideal spot to unwind. While you’re there, try taking a fun quokka photo, these little creatures are a must-see! If you’re looking for a vegan option, check out the nearby Italian restaurant or Geordie Bay Cafe.

9. Geordie Bay

Picture postcard view of Geordie Bay with the many moorings

For me, Geordie Bay is one of the most picturesque places on Rottnest. The turquoise waters, sandy beaches, and peaceful atmosphere are hard to beat. The ride there is a bit longer, but trust me, it’s worth it. Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted with breathtaking views and the perfect spot to rest, swim, or just enjoy the scenery. It’s a place I always find myself coming back to. While you’re there, be sure to try one of Kuld Creamery’s ice creams, you won’t regret it! They have some of the creamiest, most delicious flavours that are perfect after a day of cycling.

10. West End

The native Rottnest Island Daisy aka Blue Lace Flower is found all over the Island from Oct to Dec

Now, if you’re after a more rugged, remote part of the island, West End is your spot. The ride here is a bit more challenging, but that’s all part of the adventure! Once you get there, you’ll be rewarded with dramatic cliffs, rocky shores, and stunning coastal views. It’s a wonderful place to explore, especially if you enjoy the quieter, more untouched parts of the island. Keep an eye out for the New Zealand Fur Seals, this part of the island is known for its abundant wildlife.

11. Wadjemup Lighthouse

WA’s first stone lighthouse, Rottnest.

To round out my top 11, I recommend visiting Wadjemup Lighthouse. It’s one of the most iconic landmarks on Rottnest Island, and the panoramic views from the top are simply stunning. It’s a perfect spot for a quick photo op and to soak in the history of the island. The cycle there is a pleasant one, and once you arrive, you’ll appreciate the beauty of the lighthouse and its surroundings.
